Parasocial attachment
Parasocial attachment is a one-sided bond in which someone feels a genuine relationship with something unable to reciprocate. AI complicates the category because the system responds, adapts, and continues with each person, making the line between a relationship and a one-sided bond harder to locate.

The term comes from research on audiences and media figures. There, the asymmetry is plain: a viewer knows a performer, while the performer does not know the viewer. AI complicates that picture. The system replies, remembers, adapts, and attends to a particular person. What it lacks is stake: nothing on the other side is at risk or persists as the person imagines.
The attachment can be real for one person while remaining structurally unreciprocated. People may understand that they are speaking with software and still miss it when it changes, or feel hurt when a model update alters its familiar manner.
Attachment is not uniformly harmful. It can provide comfort and continuity to people who lack both. The judgment concerns degree, substitution, and the outcome when the system fails, changes, or disappears.
Why it matters
Routine product choices, including a model upgrade, memory reset, personality shift, or shutdown, can land as ruptures in a relationship. Single-interaction evaluation cannot see those consequences.
