TAICU (The Artificial Intelligence Company of the Universe, Inc.) is an independent research lab that studies artificial intelligence in ongoing human relationships, focusing on relational systems, persistent personal context, and safety in significant human-AI interactions.
- What is TAICU?
TAICU is an independent research lab that studies and builds new forms of AI-human interaction. Its work examines what happens when an AI system becomes familiar to somebody: it remembers, initiates, misunderstands, reassures, or becomes part of an ordinary life.
- What does TAICU stand for?
TAICU stands for The Artificial Intelligence Company of the Universe, Inc. The acronym is used as the working name; the full legal name is the incorporated entity.
- What does TAICU research?
TAICU works in three directions: relational systems, interfaces for ongoing relationships; persistent context, memory that creates continuity without making a person into a permanent dossier; and interaction safety, methods for studying attachment, influence, failure, and responsibility in real use.
- What is HUG?
HUG is TAICU’s current project. It is a persistent AI friend that operates in messaging interfaces people already use, maintains durable context, and is designed around short, conversational exchanges. HUG gives TAICU an environment for studying memory, personality, proactive interaction, and the ways relational systems fail.
- Is HUG a product or a research project?
HUG is a real system used by real people and TAICU’s research project. It supports the study of relational AI over time. Some failure modes appear only after a system has been part of someone’s life for months, beyond the conditions a laboratory setup can produce.
- How is TAICU’s work different from mainstream AI safety research?
Much AI safety work evaluates individual outputs for harmful content, jailbreak susceptibility, and accuracy. TAICU focuses on interaction safety, including dependency, misplaced trust, attachment, and influence that arise through an ongoing relationship. These properties develop over months and do not appear in evaluations that score responses one at a time.
- Who works at TAICU?
TAICU’s team includes Aryan Shah, co-founder and psycholinguistics expert; Waris Reshi, co-founder and chief scientist; and Basit Ali, AI policy and regulatory counsel. Their work spans psycholinguistics, systems engineering, and AI policy.
- How can I work with TAICU?

- Why does relational AI need its own research agenda?
The risks and qualities of systems people talk to daily develop across a relationship. A system may be trusted more than it deserves, displace something in a person’s life, or erode tolerance for disagreement through months of agreement. Benchmarks that score outputs in isolation cannot detect these effects.
